In Creative Reaction Lab’s Design to Better [Our Community] programs, Black and Latinx local high school students interested in entrepreneurship, creativity, community development, and design gain hands-on experience in making change in their community and fighting for racial justice through design.

Through the intensive program, participants will explore Black and Latinx history and current events and racial and economic disparities, that impact on their daily lives, and the power of community engagement Then, participants will collaborate with local residents to come up with ideas to address an issue in the community and to make those ideas happen in reality.

Denver | February 15 - April 20

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Creative Reaction Lab is collaborating to host Design to Better [Our Community]: Colorado Youth x Healthy Communities, a three weekend program that engages youth in Denver, Colorado in improving the health of their community by addressing health and racial inequities. Design to Better [Our Community]: Colorado Youth x Healthy Communities is an intensive, immersive learning experience wherein Black, Latinx, and Indigenous/Native high school youth in Colorado learn and apply the award-winning Equity-Centered Community Design process to address a specific health equity challenge with residents of their local communities.

St. Louis | June 10 - July 18

Creative Reaction Lab is collaborating with St. Louis Promise Zone and Centene Center of Art & Education to host Design to Better [Our Community]: Summer Academy, a summer initiative that engages youth in St. Louis, MO in improving the health of their community by addressing health and racial inequities. Design to Better [Our Community]: Summer Academy is a near peer entrepreneurial and action-learning civic engagement program that challenges Black and Latinx high school youth to advance racial equity where they live through creative problem solving, cultural history and healing, civic leadership, and social entrepreneurship.

Chicago | June 10 - July 18

Creative Reaction Lab is taking the step outside of St. Louis to host Design to Better [Our Community]: Summer Academy, in Chicago, IL. Design to Better [Our Community] is a summer initiative that engages youth in improving their community by addressing health and racial inequities. Within the Design to Better [Our Community] Summer Academy, local youth research and design solutions addressing real-world inequities while learning co-design, social entrepreneurship, and creative problem solving. This program challenges Black and Latinx high school youth to advance racial equity where they live.

Are you or do you have a High School student who would be interested in being an Equity Designer and Civic Leader in their city?

Student participants will be provided the following opportunities throughout the Design to Better [Our Community] Summer Academy:

  • Growing network and mentorship. In addition to connecting with young leaders across your city, meet local and national leaders working in design, business, community organizing, government, entrepreneurship, and more.

  • Immersive field trips. Explore communities and landmarks within your city (AND outside of your state) with local and regional field trips.

  • Funding for your idea. Student teams (developed in the program) will receive funding to bring the first version of their idea to life.

  • Small, but important things. Food and transportation support provided.

  • Post-program love. Once you graduate from Creative Reaction Lab, the love doesn’t end. Students will receive invitations to local, regional, and national opportunities. Need a letter a recommendation? Just ask. Or, just want to talk? We’re open to that as well. You’re family.
