Program Lead - Design to Better [Our Community] Summer Academy

Design to Better [Our Community] Summer Academy is a six-week program that seeks to empower Black and Latinx high school youth to co-create solutions for healthy and racially equitable urban communities.

We’re looking for an individual who is passionate about youth civic engagement and racial equity to serve as the Program Lead for our inaugural Summer Academy. With support from College Mentors, the Program Lead will be the primary facilitator of program sessions and will be responsible for a cohort of 25-30 high school students enrolled in the program.

The Program Lead will receive a program stipend to compensate for their services.

Program Lead Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement program curriculum with support from the Youth Program Manager.

  • Coordinate any field trips, site visits, guest speakers, and other programmatic engagements as needed.

  • Manage youth’s daily attendance.

  • Implement program evaluation plan.

  • Support with Creative Reaction Lab’s marketing and communications strategy.

  • Delegate tasks to Mentors as needed.

  • Work with Youth Program Manager to meet program needs within budget.

  • Ensure compliance with insurance, legal, health, and safety obligations.

  • Proactively handle any arising issues and troubleshoot any emerging problems before, during, and after learning and education programs and services.

  • Report any issues or emergencies to Creative Reaction Lab staff immediately.

Time Commitment:

  • The program will take place as follows:

    • Monday, June 11 - Thursday, July 19

    • The youth program will take place Monday - Thursday and is tentatively set from 10 AM - 3 PM each day.

    • The Program Lead is expected to be in attendance from 9 AM - 4 PM each day, with 60 minutes before and after each session for program preparation.

    • The Program Lead will be required to work one week prior to the launch of the program (the week of June 4th) to plan for the following week and one week post-program (the week of July 23rd) for wrap-up and post-evaluation.
       

  • The Program Lead is also required to complete the following:

    • Mentor + Program Lead training: TBD

    • Autodesk online training: April - May 2018

    • Mentor + Program Lead Orientation: June 4, 2018
       

  • The Program Lead is strongly encouraged to attend additional community engagement opportunities throughout the program, as able.

Applicant Eligibility:

  • Must have held leadership positions in on-campus student groups, your local community, work setting, etc. (Bonus if you have direct experience in civic engagement, racial rights and equity, diversity and inclusion, design, or social justice).

  • Must demonstrate professionalism, exceptional communication skills, and exceptional collaboration skills.

  • Must be able to dedicate time to all program sessions and trainings. (See above for details.)

  • Must have experience working with youth.

  • Must be able to develop healthy, positive relationships with young people.

  • Must have experience facilitating trainings, workshops, and/or educational programming.

  • Must be passionate about advocating for racial equity.

  • Must demonstrable abilities in one of the four core areas: entrepreneurship, cultural history, creative problem solving/design, and civic engagement.

  • Experience with mentoring and/or supervising near-peer individuals is preferred.

  • Experience with curriculum development preferred.

  • Reliable transportation is needed.

  • Must complete and pass a background check upon hire.
